The migration of wildebeest across the Mara river is a yearly phenomenon that is incomparable - save for the migration of tourist cars that arrive at the river banks to see the spectacle. But if you can tune out the hundreds of cars around you, the sight of the animals kicking up dust in the river is truly breathtaking. Inevitably you see a crocodile take down one of the wildebeests, and you’re reminded of the danger and mortality of the situation. It’s impactful and moving to grasp the concept that these animals must face grave danger in order to find enough food to continue their role in the ecosystem.

Wildebeest are considered a lynchpin species in the animal kingdom. While we think of the food chain existing as a top-down concept, wildebeest in particular play a vital role in keeping the food chain balanced. For more on this, please see this video.
