Power. Brute force. Fearsome. The cape buffalo is legendary for its temper and dangerous curving horns. But there is something so endearing about them as well, their cow-like forms so reminiscent of the cattle grazing on the plains of the western United States. These formidable creatures are an important part of the ecosystem of the savanna, keeping the tall dense grasses cut short so that other more-choosy animals can access the softer shoots below. Prized for their horns, buffalo were commonly hunted and are now considered near-threatened.
